Install & Test Smoke Alarms
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year. Replace the entire alarm every 10 years.
Create an Escape Plan
Draw a map of your home showing all doors and windows. Plan two ways out of every room. Choose an outside meeting place. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year with everyone in your household.
Kitchen Fire Safety
Never leave cooking unattended. Keep flammable materials away from the stove. If a grease fire occurs, slide a lid over the pan and turn off the heat. Never throw water on a grease fire.
Electrical Safety
Don't overload outlets or extension cords. Replace damaged cords immediately. Use the correct wattage light bulbs. Install arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) for added protection.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
Install CO detectors on every level of your home. Never use generators, grills, or fuel-burning appliances indoors. Have your heating system inspected annually.
Fire Prevention Basics
Keep matches and lighters away from children. Never leave candles unburning unattended. Maintain a 3-foot clearance around space heaters. Clean dryer lint traps after every use.
